Naomi Osaka Logo
Logo for NO
Naomi wanted to use her initials that conveyed her multi-cultural heritage and to reflect her personality.
My concepts were inspired by her love of anime, Comme des Garçons and Japanese culture.
My hand drawn approach leaned into the idea of Wabi-Sabi, an aesthetic described as one of appreciating beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete" in nature. Naomi often shared that her journey was extremely important to her and that she understands she would have high points and low points.
The other inspiration for the logo was of a cherry blossom. This may sound cliche on the surface but cherry blossoms represent resilience and joy in Japanese culture, just like her approach to her journey in life as well as an athlete. They also happen to grow in Haiti, Japan and the United States, each representing her in a different way.
My role as a designer was to research, ideate and design concepts for Naomi’s logo.
Getting to present those concepts to her and having her choose one of four of her favorites was a really special.
